Stella Gibbon's Cold Comfort Farm (Penguin, 2006) has the mixed blessing of being among the very few books that have been made into equally good films. But, even if you've seen the movie, don't let that deter you from reading the book – it's quite simply one of the funniest satirical novels of the last century. Also, Victor Carl's not a particularly successful attorney, always teetering on the edge of going broke, so he's frequently forced to take cases no one else will, and he's not above using deceit, dodgy ethics, and downright trickery to get his clients off. A Killer's Kiss (Morrow, 2007), author William Lashner gives Victor a toughy.
