Red Sox News
- Timlin Shut down for 1 Week
- experienced soreness in his oblique muscle again after pitching batting practice
-
Timlin had an MRI taken on Thursday, which revealed a strain
- The 6-foot-4 right-hander was scheduled to pitch against the Tigers in
Lakeland, Fla., for the first time this spring on Saturday, which
coincidentally is the day he turns 41 years old.
- Donnelly has allowed five hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings
- Pineiro
has given up seven hits and five runs (four earned) in four 1/3 innings
and
- Tavarez has surrendered six hits and four runs (three earned) in 5
2/3 innings.
- Craig Hansen looked rusty in his spring debut on Friday.
- The
23-year-old righty, who has been bothered by stiffness in his back,
gave up three doubles that accounted for two runs and walked one.
- Health-wise, it was good. Result-wise, it wasn't that great. But we can fix that."
- Lester Returns to Game Action
- The cancer survivor pitched a perfect first inning in a Spring Training
B-game at Hammond Stadium against the Minnesota Twins, getting three
groundouts, two to shortstop with a groundout to third sandwiched in
between.
- Lester needed just eight pitches to retire Alexi Casilla, Glenn
Williams and Mike Redmond. Lester threw eight pitches, six for strikes
- locked at 88 mph, two at 89 mph and one at 90 mph.
- Lester's first game action since Aug. 23, when he allowed six hits and
three run and earned a win against the Angels in Anaheim. Nine days
later, the club and Lester announced he had a rare non-Hodgkin's form
of lymphoma.
- Wake works on Curve
- hoping his curveball can be a better secondary weapon this year than it's been in the past.
- threw five curveballs in Wednesday's three-inning stint against the
Mets. By comparison, Wakefield generally spins two or three breaking
balls over six or seven innings of a regular-season start.
- got a lot of strikeouts with it last year.
- Wakefield said that he's already been told he'll follow Jonathan Papelbon and pitch the fifth game of the season.
- Elite Rotation
- The way Curt Schilling sizes things up, he will barely be the ace of
the Red Sox this season.
- Schilling looks at Boston's rotation much like
a loaded, five-card deck.
- He sees it as a quintet
- Josh Beckett. "It's also nice to have some other guys that kind of
pitch the same way you do. You can ask them, 'Well, how did you get
this guy out or how do you get that guy out?' I think that's going to
help us all."
- here are four power arms and then there's Tim Wakefield, the ultimate study in finesse.
- Lefty Jon Lester is one of the most promising young pitchers in
baseball, assuming he gets back to 100 percent strength following a
winter of chemotherapy treatments.
- Lester will probably start the year
in Triple-A Pawtucket and be readily available in the event of an
injury.
